Here is a video of our design painting process for our Lunar Rain Selkie Seal Earrings. When our designer Melissa Chen thinks of a new design idea, she first paints the idea in watercolour on paper. This painting is then used as reference to create the final piece of jewellery.
Selkies are mythological creatures that originate from Scottish and Irish folklore. They are said to be seals in the water but can shed their skin to transform into beautiful humans on land. The name “selkie” is derived from the Scots word for “seal.”
According to the legends, selkies are known for their enchanting singing voices and their ability to bring good fortune to fishermen. They are often depicted as gentle and graceful beings, and their stories often revolve around themes of love, loss, and longing.
All of our 18k gold Selkie Seal necklaces and earrings have one-of-a-kind dendritic agate bellies. Each dendritic agate has unique patterns made of natural mineral inclusions; they are like fingerprints in stone. Meaning that no two people own the same seal.
One selkie tale tells of a lonely fisherman who discovers a group of selkie maidens dancing on the shore. Captivated by their beauty, he steals one of their seal skins, preventing her from returning to the sea. The selkie maiden is then forced to become his wife on land, but she always pines for her true home in the ocean. Eventually, she finds her hidden seal skin and returns to the sea, leaving behind her human life and family.
Selkies are sometimes portrayed as tricksters, capable of causing mischief or exacting revenge if mistreated by humans. They are also associated with the sea’s unpredictable nature, embodying both its allure and its dangers.
The tales of selkies continue to captivate imaginations and inspire various artistic expressions, such as literature, music, and visual arts. They serve as metaphors for the longing for freedom, the pull of the natural world, and the complexities of love and identity.
In modern times, selkies have gained recognition beyond their Celtic origins, becoming beloved characters in contemporary fantasy literature and movies. They remain a fascinating part of folklore, weaving tales that resonate with the deep connection between humanity and the natural world.
