Lunar Rain: Designing the Mermaid Ring
Lunar Rain: Designing the Mermaid Ring by Melissa Chen
Here is a video of my design painting process for my Mermaid Ring design for Lunar Rain. When I think of a new design idea, I first paint the idea in watercolour on paper. This painting is then used as reference to create the final piece of jewellery.
When designing the Mermaid Ring, I wanted to create a simple but unique mermaid ring design that hadn’t been done before. I specifically wanted to design a timeless mermaid ring that wouldn’t look old fashioned like many of the existing art nouveau style mermaid rings on the internet. When designing this idea, I gave the mermaid a relaxed serene expression. She was then given our signature matte finish to make her tail scales stand out. The final piece is very wearable and stacks well with our other oceanic rings.
Mermaids have appeared in folklore across many cultures, with ancient Greek mythology featuring the sirens as sea nymphs who lured sailors to their doom. In medieval Europe, mermaids were often depicted as omens of disaster or symbols of temptation, blending Christian and pagan beliefs. During the Age of Exploration, sailors’ tales and exaggerated accounts contributed to the enduring fascination with mermaids in Western literature. In modern times, mermaids have become symbols of enchantment and mystery, featured prominently in literature, film, and popular culture.
The mermaid ring pairs well with our other ocean themed designs from our Full Fathom Five Collection.
