Lunar Rain: Designing the Salamander Ring
Lunar Rain: Designing the Salamander Ring by Melissa Chen
Here is a video of my design painting process for my Salamander Ring design for Lunar Rain. When I think of a new design idea, I first paint the idea in watercolour on paper. This painting is then used as reference to create the final piece of jewellery.
When designing the Salamander Ring, I wanted to create something that was cute, spirally and symbolic. When designing this idea, I tried to create balanced curves that curl elegantly around the finger. The final piece in our signature matte finish is very wearable and a little bit witchy (especially the spotted versions).
In folklore, salamanders were sometimes associated with mystery and the supernatural, reflecting their elusive nature and habitat in damp, hidden places. Salamanders have symbolized various attributes across cultures, often representing transformation and regeneration due to their ability to regenerate lost limbs. In medieval alchemy, they were believed to be fire-resistant and thus symbolized the element of fire and the purification it brings. Today, they continue to symbolize adaptability and resilience in various cultural contexts.
We have a plain salamander ring and spotted ring in 18k solid gold with various gemstone options. All gemstones are carefully hand set in flush settings, level with the surface of the rings.
