Lunar Rain’s logo was designed in 2018 by designer, Melissa Chen. The logo is LUNAR RAIN written in capital letters and is based on the Trajan font. The logo is often depicted in white, black or blue text depending on the colour of the background.

Melissa decided on using the Trajan font because some of her designs for Lunar Rain are inspired by ancient Roman sculptures and jewellery. The Roman inspired Trajan font was carefully chosen to match our products.

The Trajan font is a serif typeface that draws its inspiration from the classical Roman inscriptions found on Trajan’s Column, which stands in Rome and dates back to 113 AD. This connection to ancient Rome gives the font a timeless, monumental quality, with its sharp serifs and clean lines reminiscent of the stone carvings of the era. The design is entirely in uppercase letters, which enhances its stately and authoritative feel, making it a popular choice for formal and historical contexts. The proportions are wide and carefully balanced, giving it an elegant, yet strong presence.

A little bit of art history:

Trajan’s Column is a monumental structure located in Rome, erected in 113 AD to commemorate Emperor Trajan’s victory in the Dacian Wars. The column stands in the center of Trajan’s Forum, a large public space built by Trajan himself, and was designed by the architect, Apollodorus of Damascus. Standing at 98 feet (30 meters) tall, the column is made of Carrara marble and is adorned with a continuous frieze that spirals up the entire shaft. This frieze depicts a detailed, narrative relief of the Roman army’s campaigns in Dacia, highlighting important events, battles, and the Emperor’s leadership throughout the war. The reliefs offer a valuable historical record of Roman military tactics, equipment, and the empire’s engineering feats during the period.

The spiral relief that wraps around the column is one of the most remarkable features, extending over 650 feet (200 meters) in length. The frieze is not just a series of static images but a continuous, evolving story, showcasing Trajan’s army in various stages of battle, as well as scenes of preparation, diplomacy, and the everyday life of soldiers. The column’s design allows the viewer to follow the narrative as they ascend or descend the column, offering a unique perspective on the progression of the war. This method of storytelling through sculpture was groundbreaking at the time and has influenced monumental art throughout history.

At the top of the column, there was originally a statue of Trajan, which has since been replaced by a statue of Saint Peter in the 16th century. The base of the column also contains a small chamber, believed to house Trajan’s ashes. Trajan’s Column has survived the centuries relatively intact and remains a significant example of Roman art and architecture. It not only serves as a commemoration of Trajan’s military success but also as a testament to the artistic and engineering prowess of the Roman Empire. Today, it is considered one of the finest examples of Roman monumental sculpture and continues to be an important symbol of Roman imperial power and artistic achievement.
